    Alchemist’s Apprentice review

There is this growing phenomenon of game developers trying to think about titles that are very small and requires very small effort. On the other hand Alchemist’s Apprentice is a hidden object and hybrid game that tries to push in too many things into the little space.

The game is excellent in patches with a very engaging plot but the game play could have been improved a bit.
The graphics of the game is par excellence where you will love the lovely backdrops and character art (hand drawn). The tile screen is also endearing wherein there is a magician whose robes flutter in the wind and wolf shown in the moonlight creates a great effect.

The unusual storyline is going to take you by surprise wherein a conjuror is asked to rebuild a kingdom. There are some technical problems in the game in the form of grammatical errors that testifies really sloppy work from the developers. The charm of the game is also marred by the shabby menu and even shabbier font usage.

The game play also swings between two very good looking mundane activities. You have to search for the scrolls, swords and shields as done in a typical hidden object games. There is also another activity of matching the coins and symbols. There is also the occasional activity of puzzle solving but things do not turn boring because of the visual treat they offer (you can give a miss to the lack of originality too).

The second activity which lasts throughout the game is swapping two items and making three objects in total in the grid. You are going to collect coins and also remove tiles during the activity. These activities will prove to be run of the mill activities for all the casual space gamers.

There are a lot of other activities along with the baggage and this is what makes things really cramped! For instance, you can have mysterious powers and build buildings in between the activities that will help you have some extra mystical powers. You can even recruit allies who will help you to pass the hurdles easily. There is also the bonus of collecting coins in the mini games. You can also have nifty bonuses that pop up on the puzzle board.

All the above will tend to confuse you to the hilt because of the poor explanation and too many things to keep a tab upon at the same time. The state objectives will up the level of frustration as they are very lengthy. The lack of variety during the long coin collection spree will leave you exasperated.

Conclusion: The mini games and the boring levels will surely take a toll on your patience and you will be relieved to leave the computer in the early stages itself. The game has proved to be a real disaster because somehow the design teams and developers had some ego clash or else such a game could have never come to being. The mistake committed by the developers is the same as most of the others; they tried to put in too many inside the bag and making the bag impossible to be carried!
