Cate West: The Velvet Keys review
The game Cate West: The Velvet Keys, is about a serial killing and the peculiarity of all the murders is that the dead bodies have no signs of foul play, they don’t decay even in three days yet they are corpses. Here when Cate comes and uses her unique talent for tracking the suspects of the murderer. In the process of her investigation, she discovers an ancient curse, an unconcealed crypt and an enemy who is deceiving!
The game is the sequel to the game Cate West: the vanishing files, and thus sometimes it refers to previous characters and events which might lead to confusion for any new player. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you wouldn’t understand about why Wesley is criticizing Cate. Soon you will understand and will come to know why Cate uses the psychic vision for helping the police. This is where the clues in your hidden objects lies!
The hidden object games always make an attempt to search typical types of clues and hints for finding the hidden object but here in this game this has been done quite masterfully. For awakening the bodies from their undying states, Cate forges the velvet keys with an alchemical substance and for that you need to find out items like hiking boots, duck, scissors and katana.
The way in which the objects are hidden is well designed maneuver, while sometimes it can be tough even for an experienced player. The list of the items involves a bit of fair plays and for that you may have to answer some tricky questions. After the velvet keys have been assembled, Cate can converse with the spirit of the victims and that would help her to understand the crime scenario. Although there won’t be any clue elements in all the images and that would be quite a challenging job. But to make the scenes identical, it is necessary to track out every item so that you can get back to the scenes once again.
The most interesting aspect of the game is that with every examination of the items Cate must identify the meanings of the items and here the gamer needs to give his creative inputs. Like if you have found a half cassette tape, you need to repair it so that Cate can find the other half to complete the image. The mini games where you need to understand the mentality of the victim are a little boring.
When Cate will be able to gather all the information about the victims, then she tries to revive the bodies with a strange machine for which she needs to activate a key. However the puzzles involved in this scene and in many other scenes, are quite ordinary like the sliding tile games and so you can skip them. But skipping a puzzle might hamper the scores and thus you may not want to skip. For finding other items and for solving puzzles, you will be awarded with bonus points. Some items could be found without a hint.
Conclusions: The players can expect something more than hidden objects because it is a smart and long game which meets the standards of its genre. Cate West: The Velvet Keys surely sets a yardstick.
