Department 42: The Mystery of the Nine review

Department 42: The Mystery of the Nine is a game that deserves a five star rating as it has everything that you can ask from a hidden object game and this time Big Fish Games has pulled up a winner from its stable! The challenging game play, riveting story, mind boggling puzzles and polished production values all add up to a game that can define the words “A perfect game”.

The game has a few flaws, but they can be ignored as the game takes you on a rollercoaster ride on the screen.
The game gives you the opportunity of playing the role of an investigating agent with an organization that deals with the paranormal. You are entrusted with the job of finding out the 9 missing artifacts that are linked with evil. These were locked up in a Grimstone mansion and have now gone missing, so you have to find them in order to quarantine their evil activities. As a result of this there are a lot of mysterious things that are taking place and you are the only person who can stop them.

Now, you will encounter a small problem or you can even name it as a mistake that the developers have committed where even the male players would be known by the name of Alice Wright in the game! The game is a classical HOG style game where you would have to search for clues in cluttered indoors and outdoors as well. The list of items appear at the bottom of the screen where you are to find and click on the items to see them disappearing from the list. You cannot find any relation of the objects that you find either with the location or story. For instance, you would have to find for a strawberry in the brook or the remote in a werewolf’s cave. One by one items go on adding to the inventory and they are to be used in solving the puzzles or for unlocking new scenes.

You have to be very precise in your clicks as there is no space for error but you can definitely use the hints. For instance I found it really difficult while clicking on the paws as every time I clicked I missed it and as a result had to pay the penalty. You may also get confused while clicking ion the objects as it is not very easy to find the objects because they are to be observed very minutely for recognition. The mini games are fun to play and these are not like the mini games that we generally see in the other games. With 20 mini games you are surely going to have a ball and if you do not like a puzzle then you also have the option to skip it.

Conclusion: The negatives of the game are overshadowed by the positives that one is going to derive from the game. At times you may feel frustrated but then the great graphics and lovely background music is going to more than make up for the loss. The storyline is just too good with 9 unique cases that one has to solve and the high production values add the icing on the cake. The overall gaming experience will just blow away the negative feelings that you may pick up during any stage of the game. The small problems are the only things that spoil the show to a certain extent otherwise Department 42: The Mystery of the Nine is one of the best games of the year 2009.
