Jewel Quest Mysteries: Curse of the Emerald Tear review

Quite different from the other Jewel Quest games, this game is centered around the hidden object game play. As you can guess from its name, Jewel Quest, there will also be match-three puzzles involved, but they’re just mini-games and are not the focus of the game – they take just about 1/5th of the game time.

The hidden object game is disappointedly standard. You have 18 different locations, where a lot of junk is thrown around, and you have to search for some items you’re given in the list. The objects are irrelevant to the story and to the locations, which is a minus. You will see mismatches such as frozen popsicle in a desert, or a dartboard at the ancient tomb. There are a lot more than 18 scenes throughout the game, so the same locations are used again and again, with all the objects in the same places all the time. Sure, you have a different list of items to search each time, but it increases the monotony and lowers the challenge and fun.

You can use hints to help you proceed when you’re stuck. They’re limited, but can be replenished by collecting coins. There is also a nice feature of the game, not seen in the other hidden object games, in terms of upgrades. You can collect gems in the levels, and then use them to do various upgrades to help you play – such as increase the time limit or get a helper “jewel sense” ability.

Between levels, you can play various mini puzzles. Majority of those are based on match three game, where you have to swap adjacent gems to form triples of vertical or horizontal items of the same type, which then disappear and free up the space for the new ones. There are also the other types of mini games, but they’re not described or are not as familiar as match 3 and can even be annoying in their confusing rules.

Conclusions: Jewel Quest Mysteries: Curse of the Emerald Tear is a fun game, unfortunately it doesn’t provide as much variety as it should. The hidden object element is your typical seek and find puzzle – nothing new, just the same old thing. The storyline is okay, but nothing spectacular. The puzzle mini-games are nice, but some are a bit too confusing. All in all, it’s okay – the game you can play to fill your time, but not something you should look to for exciting and great experience.
