Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor review

Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor is quite an innovative and fresh hidden object game, which offers unique opportunities not seen in the other seek and find games. These include: animated backgrounds, the goal to find object pieces (instead of whole objects), adventure puzzles of finding the use for the objects you discovered.

The story in this game is what you should expect from a typical ghosts story. It’s scripted very well and is done just right. It’s somewhat scary and it really feels like being in a manor full of ghosts. The settings are incredible! Unlike most hidden objects games, the backgrounds during the gameplay are animated to create quite a lively experience.

The common hidden object gameplay involves finding out item pieces scattered throughout the rooms of the Manor. Since they’re much smaller than the full objects and are less recognizable, it’s harder than the usual hidden objects search. The random clicking is handled in a very nice and logical way – if you click randomly, you summon some ghosts which will fly around distracting you from your search. That’s the way to really force you into looking and not just clicking around!

Solve the adventure-style objects interactions. Basically, just figure out where you should put the object you just recovered. To make things harder, the objects recovered in one room often have to be used in the other room, so you will have to look around.

Once you’re done with objects search and placement, there will be yet another adventure style puzzle waiting for you. Figure out how to make the objects in the rooms interact with each other to solve the puzzles. This is blended into the hidden object search, so that you have to solve some puzzles to gain access to some yet-not-found items.

There are a few negative things in the game. The biggest gripe is probably the length of the game. It will take just about 2 hours on average to finish the game. While it’s great, you might feel a bit disappointed that it finishes so fast. Besides that, as already mentioned, the object pieces are very small and very tricky to spot. The game’s generally dark background doesn’t make it any easier to spot dark item parts. The hints available do help, but they’re limited as usual. Also, if you’re not a fan of adventure games, you might get stuck with some of the harder puzzles.

Conclusions: Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor is very fun hidden object game with lots of innovations in the gameplay, great story and lively animated graphics, so you will definitely not be bored with it. Its varied gameplay and puzzles will easily steal your time without you noticing. Unfortunately, the game’s length is too short – and that’s the main disadvantage of the game. Other than that, the game can be recommended to any players, not just hidden object game fans. If you like this game, you might also want to try it’s sequel, Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox.
